Happy Hanukkah

To our families who celebrate: Happy Hanukkah!

The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, will begin at sundown on Thursday, December 10. During the holiday, which lasts for eight days, those who observe will light a candelabrum with nine branches, called a menorah, each night. One branch is typically placed above the others and this candle, called the shamash - the helper candle, is used to light the other eight candles. Each night, one additional candle is lit, until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival. Other Hanukkah festivities include playing the game of dreidel and eating oil-based foods, such as latkes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts). The oil-based food represents the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days, which is also represented in the eight candles of the Hanukkah menorah.
